the advantages of direct thermal printing in healthcare

Direct thermal printing is an efficient process that prints directly onto specially designed thermal paper or foil, embedding colour formers within it. The print is activated by heat, eliminating the need for thermal transfer foil. This method uses a simple thermal pressure bar, which is easy to maintain with periodic cleaning using an alcohol pad. The print typically appears in black, like the output of thermal fax machines. However, the quality of patient wristbands is ensured by using high-grade, durable materials, avoiding cheaper unprotected types.

This method offers simplicity and reliability in printing patient wristbands, meeting the high demands of a clinical setting.

Why high-quality thermal paper matters

In healthcare, the quality demands on thermal paper are much higher than for ordinary fax or receipt paper. High-quality thermal materials have a protective layer that guards against scratches and damage. They must also be resistant to chemicals, such as alcohol-based disinfectants, which can cause discoloration and affect readability and scan ability with barcode scanners. Using substandard thermal materials can result in grey or black spots, which is highly undesirable for patient wristbands.

Choosing the right thermal paper ensures durability and functionality in a healthcare environment.

Advantages of direct thermal printing

Cost and time savings

Eliminates the need for additional ribbons, reducing both expenses and the time spent on refilling supplies.

Simplified operation

Only the wristband roll needs to be replaced, not the thermal transfer ribbon, making it easier for staff.

Compact and economical printers

Printers are generally smaller and less expensive as they don’t require a separate holder for ribbon rolls.

Versatility

Existing thermal transfer printers can be adapted to use direct thermal materials, such as roll wristbands, by simply removing the ink ribbon.

This printing technique offers efficiency and convenience in a healthcare setting, ensuring high-quality, durable patient wristbands.

Durability and scanning barcodes

The barcode on the wristband is unique to each patient and linked to the hospital information system. It needs to be scannable at every point-of-care and durable throughout the patient’s hospital stay. Any issues with the barcode can be time-consuming, frustrating for staff, and pose a risk to patient safety. Ensuring a clear print of the barcode and reviewing the wristband’s durability are essential steps.

Remember, the seemingly small wristband plays a significant role in patient safety!
